right. I know it's a self-help book. But, if you are African
American; know someone who is African-American; are a
little bit or a lot overweigh;, know someone who is a
little bit or a lot overweight; or are curious about the
connection between African-American women, obesity and
health issues, then Livin' Large is a purchase
worth making.
The Mitchell sisters (Dr. Stacy and Teri) share their
personal experiences to help explain how weight affects
our health in far greater and more detrimental ways
than I ever imagined. Coming from a family with a history
of heavy people, Stacy and Teri's stories held particular
interest and meaning for me. Besides that, I learned
a lot.
Do you know the correlation between cancer and body
fat? Between respiratory illness and body fat? Well,
I do now. I also know more about optimal heart rate
when exercising and how emotions are attached to eating
habits.
This book is different from many others because of
how the stories and lessons are told. Stacy gives us
medical information in layman's terms, explains things
such as blood pressure, and explores various weight-loss
options. Teri chimes in to provide personal testimony
about her own struggles and pose real-life questions
that we regular folks might be thinking like "Do
I have to give up sweet potato pie?"
This is not the kind of book that people will just
rush to read. Yet, I think it is something that we should
rush to get on our shelves. It is a wonderful reference
book and provides poignant stories, along with a few
chuckles. It really works.
We all know health issues are serious so I appreciate
the light-hearted way that I was educated without being
lectured to. Pick it up. Loan it to someone. Spread
the word.
I want to buy this for a few people who are dear to
me as the issues addressed are very applicable. With
that said, I am not sure how to couch such a gift. I
suppose I could just tell the truth - I give you this
because I love you.
