Remember when Bruce Willis was a box office sure thing? When the flicker of his face in a trailer would assure a huge draw? Who could resist his catchy one-liners, his cocky way of always getting the girl, and even his ability to function without knowing that he was already dead? Well, that time has passed and Bruce's track record is pretty splotchy, which is why most folks will miss Hostage. That's too bad, because it is his best action movie in many years.
Unable to deal with memories from a botched hostage negotiation, Jeff Talley (Bruce) leaves Los Angeles to work as a police chief in Ventura County. He seems relatively at peace, with the exception of his very bitchy daughter (played by real-life daughter Rumer) who hates traveling to visit on the weekends. His nearly criminal-free existence crumbles when a millionaire and his kids are taken hostage by three delinquent, delusional teens. With one dead body and another lingering near death, Jeff backs out handing control of the situation over to the Sheriff's Department.
Soon, however, he has to reassume command because his family has been kidnapped by a grown-up band of lawbreakers who need to get some valuable information out of the house. Jeff cannot tell anyone what's going on and finds himself struggling to save the hostages in and out of the house, as well as the lives of the foolish teen kidnappers. In essence, it is Jeff who becomes the hostage.
It was enjoyable, showing glimpses of old Bruce, sans the one-liners. The plot and subplots had many twists, albeit most unbelievable, but definitely exciting. There were guns, crashes, fire, knives, and explosions. Add in a few ridiculous villains, a clever kid as Bruce's partner, and you have got yourself a pretty good ride. |
