| I was one of those teenagers who missed the whole Tolkien thing. Didn’t catch it in college either. As a matter of fact, I picked up the first book of the Lord of the Rings trilogy five days prior to going to see the movie on its opening night. I was 78 pages shy of finishing when the lights went down and the adventure began. I am certain that I probably missed some of the Hobbit/Elf/Gnome/Sorcerer lingo, but no matter. This movie was a fantastic ride of mysticism, beauty, and heroism. My heart was racing. Was there violence? Of course. What else can one do with swords, knives, and arrows, but fight? Nevertheless, it was clean violence. No blood. No guts. You see the action, sans the nasty results.
It is with great pride that I admit I am no longer on the outside of this wonderful fantasy world, but rather right smack in the middle. What a great story!! The evil Sauron is seeking a ring of power that will allow him to rule over all beings in Middle Earth. The ring has fallen into the hands of Bilbo Baggins (Ian Holm), who has no real concept of what he possesses. Still, he recognizes that it is of great value and leaves it in the care of his heir, Frodo (Elijah). Along with the mortals, Aragorn (Viggo) and Boromir (Sean), Gandalf the Wizard (Ian McKellan), the elf Legolas (Orlando), Gimli the dwarf (John), and two other hobbits , Frodo sets out to destroy the ring in the fires of Mordor. Thus, we have the fellowship of the ring. And so the adventure begins with Sauron and Saruman's evil minions hot on the trail creating much havoc.
The battle scenes, the humor, the intensity - - fabulous! Even the cinematography was top of the line. The first thing that I said at the end of the nearly three-hour adventure - - ‘I can barely wait to see it again!' By the way, I finished all three books plus The Hobbit, shortly thereafter. Wow!
