One-word View: Laughable

Queen of the Damned was the last book that I read by Anne Rice. Making a vampire a rock star seemed really dumb to me. But, more importantly, I was tired of Rice’s repeated use of the word “preternatural”. So, I went to see the film version with more than a little hesitation. Even with my doubt about the quality of the movie, I did want to pay some type of homage to Aaliyah. Too bad this had to be her last body of work. I felt as if I was watching an MTV video: a bad MTV video. Maybe I am just too doggone old, but this movie sucked.

Perhaps I unfairly compared the people in this movie to those who starred in Interview with the Vampire. I couldn’t help it. Remember that movie? Everyone was beautiful and alluring. Pitt, Cruise, Banderas, Dunst. That’s the purpose. To make that life seem sexy and make you wonder, if only for a moment, what it would be like to live for eternity, to have that evil power. I admit it. I have always been attracted to that proverbial dark side. It’s fascinating. It’s sexy. Does that make me weird? Maybe, but so what? The movie image of vampires is such that we are drawn into their beautiful, morbid worlds. We are supposed to be mesmerized by their presence. That didn’t happen with this pitiful movie. There was nothing sensual or enthralling. I wanted them to put on some clothes and rethink the stupid way they walked across the floor. Oh, geez, I really just wanted to drown them all in a vat of garlic
