| The
list of sequels that are as good or nearly better than
their predecessors is short: Godfather II, Aliens,
The Lord of the Rings - The Two Towers.
And I am certainly not trying to equate the very light
Ocean's Eleven with the aforementioned precursors.
But, Ocean's Twelve did not come close to capturing
the fun and camaraderie of the first offering. The circuitous
route through the U. S., Amsterdam and Italy was mimicked
by the abundance of twists and turns of the storyline
that failed to be clever and succeeded in being a bit
slow-moving.
The gang is all back, of course, with Daniel (George)
and Rusty (Brad) at the helm and the new addition of
Isabel (Catherine) as Rusty's former girlfriend who
is also a federal agent. The team has to reunite because
Terry Benedict (Andy) has tracked them all down and
wants his money back, plus interest. Based on what has
already been spent, the guys need to raise approximately
$97 million in two weeks or die. Since they cannot do
another job in the U.S., off they go to Amsterdam, Rome,
and Lake Como. This time, even Tess (Julia) has to become
part of the plan because so much is at stake.
The biggest thorn in the team's side is not Benedict,
however, but a fellow thief known as the Night Fox who
is determined to prove that he is the best. Wherever
Ocean's crew shows up, the Fox has already been. So,
in order to get the money, Daniel and Rusty have to
figure out how to outfox the Fox. The funniest parts
of the movie are Linus' (Matt) attempts to become a
more polished thief and negotiator. He is really fun
to watch.
As is often the case with some of the bigger celebrities
in romantic scenes, they tend to lack chemistry on the
screen. There is nothing between Brad and Catherine
and even less between George and Julia. It is the friendship
and brutal honesty shared amongst the fellas that made
Ocean's Eleven such a great buddy flick. It
is the lack of focus on those same relationships that
makes the sequel a yawner at times.
You all know that I love my guys - - Brad, George,
Don, Matt. However, it just did not click. As expected,
everyone looked really great. How can they not? Still,
I drifted a few times, which should not be easy to do
with that much talent and that much good looks on the
screen.
