| You all know how I felt about Charlize: didn’t like her very much, as she was usually portraying some silly victim. However, I am a fan now or at least of this particular phase of her career. Monster tells the story of real-life hooker turned serial killer Aileen Wuornos. Aileen falls in love with emotionally underdeveloped Selby Wall (Christina) and goes to extreme lengths to try to provide “a real life” for the two of them.
Aileen, a hooker since the age of 13, had experienced
brutality at the hands of men beginning at the age of
8 and seemed to suffer the final snap as her love for
Selby became stronger and stronger. Admittedly, her
character was portrayed in a completely sympathetic
light that was a bit hard to swallow, but the story
itself was very moving. I never expected it to be so
touching and tremendously sad.
Aileen was executed in 2002 for the murders, after serving about 10 years on death row.
